SINGAPORE – July 5, 2018– Singapore’s tropical weather and year-long summer is the best breeding ground for mosquitoes. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has detected more Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in recent months, with 22 percent more mosquitoes detected in the first three months of this year as compared to the previous three months, renewing concerns over a dengue flare-up in Singapore. More than just a nuisance, Aedes mosquitoes, ticks and other insects can spread dangerous diseases like the Zika virus and Lyme disease. Insect repellents, including those containing Picaridin (Icaridin), distributed by LANXESS under the brand Saltidin®, offer proven protection again ticks and mosquitos.

The Zika virus remains a threat, as well. The first case of locally transmitted Zika in Singapore was reported in August 2016 and by the end of that year, about 450 people were confirmed to have been infected. Spread primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito, Zika currently has no specific medical treatment or vaccine, and infection during pregnancy has been linked to serious birth defects and neurological disorders.

Picaridin is one of the CDC-recommended, EPA-registered insect repellent active ingredients found effective in protecting against insects that cause both Lyme disease and the Zika virus.

The highly effective, broad spectrum insect repellent active ingredient, Picaridin provides long-lasting, effective protection from mosquitoes, including those that carry and transmit the Zika virus, as well as ticks.  Known for its skin-friendly properties, it is not oily, greasy or sticky on the skin. Another added benefit is that it does not damage plastics or other synthetic materials.

“Singapore residents are increasingly discerning about what they apply on their skin and use on their families. They want effective protection without some of the disadvantages associated with other insect repellents,” says Roy Lay, Sales Manager, LANXESS ASEAN for Saltidin®. “As an active ingredient, Picaridin offers formulators and end consumers the perfect balance of effectiveness, safety and user-friendliness,” he added further.

Registered with the NEA (National Environment Agency), Picaridin is one of the newer EPA-registered insect repellent ingredients under the list of Registered Public Health Pesticide and Repellent products. It works by acting on insects’ odor receptors, disabling their ability to recognize humans as blood donors. Providing up to 14 hours of protection (depending on formulation), Picaridin is safe for children when used as directed and can be used with confidence on the whole family.  Currently, there are several major brands of Picaridin-based repellents available in the Singapore and throughout the world, in various concentrations and forms, such as sprays, creams, wipes and sticks. Picaridin is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for protection against mosquitoes carrying dengue fever and the Zika virus.
