Standardized labeling, which the European Commission will introduce in 2012, provides information on three key tire performance qualities: fuel consumption, wet grip and rolling noise.

Planned are seven hierarchical grades from A to G, similar to the energy efficiency classes of refrigerators or washing machines. Tires that offer particularly low rolling resistance and thus lower fuel consumption receive the top grade – A.  As a result of the label, a customer can immediately tell how “green” his tires really are when making a purchase.

Tire Labeling is part of the European Union Energy Efficiency plan to increase energy efficiency to boost sustainable growth and competetiveness. The strategy is focused on the enforcement of existing legislation and the development of innovative solutions.

The key objectives for 2020 are:
Cutting energy consumption by 20 percent
Reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 740 billion tons
Cutting energy costs by EUR 100 billion per year

Traffic forms a substantial part of the EU efficiency plan. 18 percent of the global CO2 emissions are related to traffic.

The new EU regulations aim to improve energy efficiency and safety standards of future tires. Enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.

20 to 30 percent of the fuel consumption of a vehicle is related to tires. 24 percent of a vehicle's CO2 emissions is related to tires. So choosing the right tire does make a great difference.
