Packaging materials for food have to meet very high standards since it covers material that is consumed.

LANXESS has developed Ultramoll® IV in response to a European Union directive for polymer additives in food packaging. As of July 2007, food-wrapping foil may only be marketed if it contains particularly stable plasticizers.

Food-wrapping foil manufactured with Ultramoll® IV complies with the new directive. It is also extremely flexible and keeps foodstuffs fresh for long periods of time due to the foil’s impermeability. The new plasticizer is suitable for all types of food and is manufactured from easily available and partly sustainable raw materials.

Although Ultramoll® IV has been primarily developed for the food packaging industry, other applications have also been found. It is used today, for example, in rubber gloves worn in sushi preparation in Japan. It is also used as an additive to printing ink for food packaging. Other possible applications, currently being assessed, are dirt-repelling roofing and screw-top seals.
