Jurong Island – a chemical island in the Indian Ocean

The chemical park on Jurong Island is the result of an initiative by the government of Singapore. The enterprising vision was aimed specifically at creating a growth center for the chemical and petrochemical industries in Singapore, which does not have a plentiful supply of raw materials. Because very little land was available in the small city state to build new chemical facilities, some innovative thinking was required. The remarkable and bold solution was to infill the space between several small natural islands to form a large artificial island with an area of around 30 km². This island is home to a self-contained, state-of-the-art chemical park in the heart of the Asia-Pacific region.

Around 100 international companies are now based on Jurong Island. An intelligent, cutting-edge infrastructure ensures seamless and efficient networking. This saves the chemical park companies between 25 and 50 percent in capital outlay and between 10 and 15 percent in logistics costs.
